NATORE IS FAMOUS FOR CHALON BIL AND PALACES

July 19th, 2007

The fact is that Natore, a well known district of Bangladesh is not famous for any real character. It is most famous for the imaginary character Bonolota Sen. This character is created by Jibananda Das, who is called the poet of nature and poet of silence. When the common people hear the name of Natore they utter Kanchagolla of Natore. Kanchagolla is a kind of sweatmeat.

Then came the Cholon Bil and two famous estates and palaces.

A stranger in Natore is very eager to visit the following places:
RANI BHOBANIR RAJBARI: That means the palace of queen Bhobani. Rani Bhobani was a great social worker. She was the pioneer to spread education for the women of Bengal. It is a historical palace. Its design is charming. It is situated at the Bongojol area in the Natore district town. Everyday, huge visitors gather here to visit the palace. There is a college, a school, and other institutions in the name of Rani Bhobani.
DIGHAPATIYA RAJBARI: It is the most popular sight to the visitors. The kings of Natore lived here. It is call UTTARA GONOBHABAN now. It is one of the official residences of the president of Bangladesh. Everyone wants to see its design and area. It is situated on a large area. It has a large fancy gate, a large garden, and hundreds of rooms. There are a pond and a sculpture here. It is 5km from Natore district town, and the rickshaw fare is 8/10 taka from the Natore bus terminal.
CHOLON BIL: Cholon Bil is a large natural wetland and known to every Bangladeshi. During the monsoon, the area of the Bil increases and touches four upazilas (sub-districts) of the Natore district. The picnic parties come to Cholon Bil every season. They cook, sing, dance, and do everything they wish in their boats.

It looks like a sea, especially during the monsoon. In the monsoon season, the Bil behaves like a naughty boy. During that time, waves hurt the land frequently. Visiting Cholon Bil during monsoon season is not only a mere travel, but also an adventure.

Quick Tips/Suggestions:
Don’t come back from Natore without tasting the Kanchagolla.

Before visiting the Dighapathiya Rajbari, one will have to have the permission of the D.C. (Deputy Commissioner) of Natore. As it is the official residence of the president, the permission is for security purpose. Cameras are not allowed inside the palace.

If you can’t swim, beware of the boat journey in the Cholon Bil .

Best Way to Get Around:
As Natore is the gateway of northern Bangladesh, it is easy to access here from Dhaka. It is connected with Dhaka by road and rail. The longest highway bridge of Bangladesh, Jamuna Bridge, is on the way from Dhaka.

‘This is a tremendous success for our women cricketers. They did not play in any international tournament previously and also had a very short preparation. Still they managed to win the trophy, which was beyond our expectations. I congratulate the team,’ said Rafiqul Islam, the acting general-secretary of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Bangladesh had defeated UAE (10 wickets), Singapore (10 wickets), China (86 runs), Hong Kong (59 runs) on way to reaching the final. In the process, they bowled UAE out for only nine runs, which is a world record in any standard of international cricket.

Bangladesh outclass Hong Kong to book final place

July 17th, 2007

Bangladesh, the favourites, sealed their place in the final with a 59-run victory against Hong Kong at Johor Bahru. The result owed much to the guile of little 16-year old left-arm spinner Champa Chakma who took 3 for 16 with a variety of top-spinners, in-cutters and googlies that had all who faced her floundering.

Reform needs for insurance companies in Bangladesh

July 11th, 2007

Insurance companies have the legal and moral obligation to settle genuine claims as soon as possible, said the finance adviser, AB Mirza Azizul Islam, on Tuesday.

‘Why do you need external pressure [to settle claims],’ he asked a workshop on contribution of insurance to Bangladesh economy at a city hotel.

He was referring to certain claims that had remained pending for two to three years until 80 per cent of them to the tune of Tk 100 crore were settled on intervention of the chief controller of insurance four months ago.

Mirza Aziz urged the Bangladesh Insurance Association to set a standard of corporate responsibility and the association members to comply with it.

He also remarked that ‘soul-searching is needed to bring corporate good governance in the sector’.

The adviser said merger of insurance companies was one way to bring down the cost of operations as the local market was not big enough for as many as 62 companies to operate in.

He said he had taken an initiative to bring the insurance sector under the finance ministry from the commerce ministry and it would happen very soon.

He hinted at a change soon in the top management of Sadharan Bima Corporation as the state-owned insurance company had been facing some problems.

The chief controller of insurance, Mahfuzul Haque, said the insurance companies should go for credit rating for their own interests. ‘It is very important.’

Anomalies were detected at a number of insurance companies during a recent physical inspection of all the 62 companies operating in the country, he told the workshop.

‘My office provided each of the companies with its evaluation report and advised it to comply with the recommendations made in it,’ the CCI said.

Nizamuddin Ahmed, vice-president of Bangladesh Insurance Association, said more than 270 insurance claims worth about Tk 165 crore had been pending for years with the Sadharan Bima Corporation. He requested the finance adviser to look into the matter.

A BIA executive committee member, Abdul Matlub Ahmad, presented the keynote at the workshop.

The insurance sector earned over Tk 2,500 crore in gross premium and contributed Tk 111 crore to the exchequer in 2005, revealed the paper.

About 8 lakh people are employed in the sector directly or indirectly, Matlub said. He urged the finance adviser to amend the insurance laws through an ordinance and bring the sector under the umbrella of finance ministry as soon as possible. In his presentation, Matlub said the corporate tax should be lowered to 15 per cent from the existing 45 per cent. He hoped that in the next five years the insurance sector would be able to generate a premium income of Tk 10,000 crore and make an investment of about Tk 12,000 crore and contribution around Tk 500 crore to the exchequer in value-added and other taxes.

The partnership between Ashraful and Rahim was an eye-opener

July 5th, 2007

After Bangladesh’s symbolical first innings, followed by a meek surrender last evening after a rollicking second-innings start from the openers, there was a school of thought, and a considerably influential one at that, who had predicted this match would be done and dusted before lunch on the third day. But, at last, we were treated to resistance rather than a roll over, as Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfique clipped their naturally aggressive wings and buckled done for a proper fight.
